Aug 21, 2020. The aftermath of a large heathland fire or wildfire on Chobham Common in Surrey, UK, which started on Aug 7th 2020. Chobham Common is a National Nature Reserve and SSSI. The fire was a major incident and destroyed around 500 acres of lowland heath habitat of many rare wildlife species, including heathland birds, reptiles and invertebrates, and caused nearby homes to be evacuated. The cause remains unknown, but the heath was tinder dry during a record heatwave.
