One of the entrances to Lord Leycester Hospital, on Christmas Day, in Warwick, Warwickshire, England

The Lord Leycester Hospital originated as the guildhall of Guild of St George. The guild was founded in 1383, and the easternmost part of the building dates from about this time. The complex was considerably expanded during the 15th c., becoming the home of the United Guilds of Warwick. This was suppressed in 1546, but in 1571 the buildings were obtained by Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, for use as a home for retired soldiers and their wives (and therefore a ‘hospital’ in the historic rather than modern sense), a role it continues to fulfill to this day, although occupants can now come from any branch of the armed services. These picturesque mediaeval buildings, which are open to the public, have been been Grade I listed since 1953, and have been used for location shoots in many period dramas.
