"The Light Pours Out of Me" (detail), outdoor artwork by Anya Gallaccio. The Wilderness, Jupiter Artland, Bonnington House, Wilkieston, West Lothian.
"The Light Pours Out of Me" comprises an underground chamber of amethyst surrounded by obsidian in its natural state, protected by gold barbed wire. Anya Gallaccio (born 1963) is a British artist, who creates site-specific, minimalist installations and often works with organic matter (including chocolate, sugar, flowers and ice). Her use of organic materials results in natural processes of transformation and decay, meaning that Gallaccio is unable to predict the end result of her installations. Something which at the start of an exhibition may be pleasurable, such as the scent of flowers or chocolate, would inevitably become increasingly unpleasant over time. The timely and site-specific nature of her work make it notoriously difficult to document. Her work therefore challenges the traditional notion that an art object or sculpture should essentially be a monument within a museum or gallery. Instead her work often lives through the memory of those that saw and experienced it - or the concept of the artwork itself. Jupiter Artland is a contemporary sculpture park and art gallery near Edinburgh, Scotland. Jupiter Artland Foundation is a registered charity that is subsidized by classes, workshops, events, ticket sales, and donations. Jupiter Artland is open to general visits between May and September. Jupiter Artland sits in the grounds of Bonnington House, a 19th-century country house around 7 kilometres ( mi) west of the city of Edinburgh. The grounds of the house have been developed as the sculpture park and two new wings designed by Benjamin Tindall Architects were completed in 2015 to provide indoor gallery space. The sculpture collection was established in 1999 by art collectors Robert and Nicky Wilson and "focuses on nurturing the work of contemporary artists and commissioning site-specific work for its 120-acres of woodland and meadow. In April 2016, Jupiter Artland was shortlisted for the 2016 Museum of the Year award.
