Melons prefer a warm, light, sandy loam; being tender plant- ings, should not be made before middle of May. Plant about six seeds, half-inch deep, in hills five to six feet apart each way. The hills should have at least a peck of well-rotted compost thoroughly stirred into each of them before the seed is planted.
