Pork and beef tapeworm life cycles. Diagram showing the life cycles of the pork (Taenia solium) and beef (Taenia saginata) tapeworms. Humans can become infected by eating undercooked meat or ingesting contaminated food or water. The adult tapeworm lives in the intestine, gaining all its nutrition form the host. The eggs can pass through the intestine walls from where they migrate to the brain and muscles. In these tissues they form cysts, which can persist for a number of years.
