Mt Solitary is a popular destination for bushwalkers (hikers) in the Blue Mountains Naiional Park at Katoomba, New South Wales. The park is a favourite weekend getaway for Sydney residents with the sheer sandstone plateaus reaching heights of 1000m above sea level. Hidden valleys and narrow gorges contain remnant Gondwana rainforest and the park is World Heritage listed. "Blue" refers to the tinge the range takes on when viewed from a distance, thought to be caused by vaporising eucalyptus oil from the dense forests
