When at rest within the abdomen the hairs lieinside the whitish stalk through whose translucent wallsthey can be indistinctly seen. By the lengthening and turn-ing inside out of the stalk the hairs were gradually broughtinto view but were all closely pressed against each otherforming a straight, parallel-sided brush, but when the stalk 78 A YEAR OF COSTA RICAN NATURAL HISTORY. had completely lengthened and brought even the bases ofthe hairs into view the hairs were directed every way and thebrush became spherical.
