In the Palace of Machinery, covering base has a total height of fifty-four feet,twenty feet being depressed below thelevel and the remaining thirty-four feetelevated above the floor. This engine andits generator weigh over 500 tons andtheir value approximates $150,000. Toappreciate the size of this machine, have. an area of 200,000 square feet, which isabout the size of a city block, are theengines, condensers, moving machinery andother accessories making up the powerplant of the Worlds Fair. At the north end of the building,slightly to the left, is a 5,000 horse-power,reciprocating steam engine, which with its in mind a city house with a street frontageof twenty-five feet, a depth of sixty feet,three stories above ground, with a base-ment and sub-cellar underneath. Removethis house and there would be barely roomwithin the space to place this engine andgenerator. Next in line, proceeding west through LOUISIANA PURCHASE EXPOSITION—POWER. the central hall, is a 1,750 horse-power gasengine from Tegel, near Berlin, it is a 600 horse-power, high speedengine from Harrisburg, Pa., a 750 horse-power, medium speed steam engine fromCincinnati and a 1,000 horse-power, slowspeed steam engine from Burlington, tangential water wheel from San wheel makes 900 revolutions per minute,is re
