Sir William, a lawyer and judge, was a courtier during the reigns of both Queen Mary I and Queen Elizabeth I. He served as Solicitor General and then as Master of the Rolls, the kingdom’s Head of Civil Justice and President of the Court of Appeal. Sir William is buried in Holy Trinity Church at Long Melford. In his will he left charitable bequests to both Oxford and Cambridge universities, including £20 to be distributed among poor scholars at both institutions “unto suche as be moste towardes in vertewe and learninge”.
