Bee's head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a bee (Apis sp.). Its large compound eyes (blue) can be seen, with two antennae emerging from its head between them. Hairs on the bee and its mouthparts (lower right) are also seen. Most bees are social insects which rear their young in hives. Worker bees eat pollen and nectar from flowers, and play a vital part in the pollination of these plants. Their young are fed on the same diet as the adults, apart from those destined to be new queens. These are fed on royal jelly, a fatty and protein-rich secretion produced by the workers.
