Surrounding generates form: In the medieval centre of Oppenheim on the Rhine, directly opposite of the gothic cathedral, hidden behind high walls, used to be the stately courtyard of the Burgmann of the castle above. Since its destruction in the 19th century the area has only been used as a vineyard. And of the original building, only four plateaus of the former basement with its hidden vaults are visible behind the hill. The strict conservation regulations for ancient monuments only allowed very restricted utilization of the property and a conservative outer appearance. The new dwelling continues telling the story of the property with its interlacing vaults and plateaus above ground. In keeping with the story, the plateaus are merely lifted and covered on the sides and the roof with a fine stone granulate and any gaps are glazed.
