I have two houses 28 x 200 and two houses 28 x 75, all planted in tomatoes. I expect to plant them all in lettuce and radishes when the tomatoes have finished bearing, which will be in the last part of February. I have also a house, now in chrysanthemums, which I have been planning to use for starting my lettuce in. I am thinking of start- ing the seed in pans and transplanting into flats, and from the flats into benches. Do you think that would be a good idea? I cannot renew the soil in the houses, but will have to use the same soil. I have some good compost which I could spread on the top and spade it in. Do you think that would be satisfactory? What kind of lettuce and radish would you advise me to plant? I intend to ship them to New York or Washington. Can you give me the names of some good commission men in Washington? C. H. H. I would advise you to jise the Grand Rapids lettuce and the select stock Scarlet Globe short top forcing radish, and be careful to specify that select stock is wanted for forcing. There is a great difference in Scarlet Globe radish seed. I had some one year that produced radishes with tops on them like turnip tops, and they were nearer pink than red. All seedsmen have or can get for a customer the select forc- ing stock. The Grand Rapids lettuce is more profitable and matures more qu
