Various workson gardening were published by him ; butthe most popular is the Gardeners Calen-dar, which was originally given to theworld as the production of Mr. Mawe,who v/as at that time better known to thepublic than the real author was. ABERCROMBY, P.^TR1CK:, a physi-cian, was a native of Forfar, born in 1656,and educated at St. Andrews. He abjur-ed the Protestant faith, and was appointedphysician to James II. The date of hisdeath is not exactly known; some statingit to be 1716, and others 1726. The Mar-tial Achievements of Scotland, in two vol-umes folio, is his principal work. 4. ABERCROMBY, Sir Ralph, wasborn in 1733, at Tillibodie, in Clack-mannanshire, entered the army when onlyeighteen, and served with honour duringthe seven years war and the Americanwar. Ill 1737, he attained the rank of ABS ft major-general. During the disastrous cam-paign of 1794 and 1795, in Flanders andHolland, he distinguished himself by hisactivitv and skill, and was rewarded withthe order of the Bath. In 1706, he heldthe chief command in the West Indies,and reduced Grenada, St. Lucia, St. Vin-cent, Trinidad, Demarara, and his return, he commanded in Irelandand Scotland, and, in 1799, bore a con-spicuous part in the expedition to he been at the head of it, that ex-pedition would most probably have had aless disgracefnl termination. His lastservice was performed in Egypt, which, in1801, he was sent to rescue from theFrench. In spite of a vigorous
