If a small holeis punched in the center of the cap itwill be found that it may be forced intoplace much more easily, for if the bandand cap have been properly fitted theywill be found to form an air-tight jointwhen placed on the root. The next step is to adjust the post inthe canal, the size of which will be deter-mined by the type of root and the strainto which the crown is liable to be sub-jected. Generally speaking, it shouldcorrespond to Xo. 2 of Peesos reamers, which corresponds with Xo. 4 size ofdental alloy wire (about 13^ IT. S. G.),and this in turn with the tube in GIRDWOOD. TUBE TEETH AXD PORCELAIN RODS. 933 the non-platinum tube tooth. The postshould be tapered to follow as nearly aspossible the shape given to the canal bythe reamer, and this may best be accom-plished by holding the wire in a pin- Fig. Showing methods vise and imparting to it a rotary motionby holding it between the thumb andfingers and while so doing drawing thefile across the wire at right angles, while at the same time it is supportedin a groove in the bench block (Fig. 68) ;or the wire may simply be held in thefingers and rotated at the same time asthe filing is being done (Fig. 69). Thisenables a perfectly round and evenlytapered post to be formed, and can bequickly done after a little practice. Before the cap is placed on the root, thepointed end of the post is inserted intothe canal and pressed home into place;next, the required length, which shouldbe sufficient to reach the incisive edgeof the crowns of the adjoining teeth, ismeasured off. Having removed the postfrom the root, cut it to the requiredlength, place the cap on the root, andburnish carefully to the surface. Thenwith a pair of rough-pointed pliers () grasp the post firmly, place thepointed end through the small holeorigin
