The Gardeners' chronicle : a weekly illustrated journal of horticulture and allied subjects . ose examination, and undera common pocket lens they were at once regarded asan outgrowth of some mould. On examinationunder i compound microscope, they were found toconsist of radiating threads with distinct articulationsabout as broad as long, forked towards the circum-ference, the terminal subglobose joints being cchinu-late, as in the genus Rhinotrichum, but without anyappearance of external spores. But, on the contrary, some of the terminal or subterminal joints contameddistinct globose bodies of two sizes, the one aboutjijg or jJjj part of an inch in diameter, the otherabout 1^, which, however, could not be measuredaccurately, as they were not squeezed out by the application of iodine both assumed a dark browntint, and in one case only a single spore was observedin the art of germination. A single thread, supposedto belong to some Penicillium, was attached, as in thesubjoined figure (fig. 27). A similar formation ofspores within the cells hasbeen observed in Chionyphe,. Fig. 27. —fungus from the carpels and seeds of AIILES. A, The usu-il btate. n, Some tf the joints producing spores oftwo kinds, and one germinating:, accompanied by a thread,as it is supposed, of some PeniciHiuTi. and in the Yeast plant. In the spores of Hemileia, the pest of Coffee plantations, a similar developmenthas been observed by Mr. Abbay within the sporesthemselves. The matter is a very curious one, and it is hopedthat some one will take it up for further the first observation the same appearances pre-sented themselves in every Apple examined. Itshould be observed that the patches on the seedsretained after eight hours exposure in parts thesesnow-white tints, while parts were stained by matterfrom the cuticle of the seed, and where the seedspressed against the growth in the carpels the terminaljoints of the parasite were similarly tinted. The figure shows a group o
