A mid-18th century view of an artist sketching Chesil Beach, aka Chesil Bank) from Portland Heights in Dorset, England. Its name is derived from the Old English ceosel or cisel, meaning "gravel" or "shingle" and it runs for a length of 29 kilometres (18 miles) from West Bay to the Isle of Portland. Behind the beach is the Fleet, a shallow tidal lagoon.
