Intricate temple roof with squirrel, Shwedagon Pagoda, Yangon, Myanmar

The Shwedagon Pagoda (Shwedagon Zedi Daw, Golden Pagoda), standing on Singuttara Hill in Yangon, is the most famous and most sacred shrine in Myanmar, dating to the Mon people around 2,600 years ago. According to legend, 8 of the Gautama Buddha's hairs are enshrined beneath the dome and the pagoda is said to contain relics from four previous Buddhas. The tradition is to make three clockwise circuits of the pagoda. There are a number of ancillary buildings around the main pagoda such as this Daw Pwint Tazaung, photographed with a squirelle running up its support wires.
