Dental implant fixtures. Close-up of healing dental implants in the jaws of a 65-year-old man. There are adjacent missing teeth in his upper jaw, with three implant fixtures surgically embedded into holes drilled in the patient's jawbone. Metal dental parts (called abutments) are screwed into the implants and used to support tooth-like crowns or a bridge. The teeth of the lower jaw have been prepared for future dental bridges. Crowns, bridges and dentures are prosthetic teeth fitted to replace missing teeth, or teeth too damaged to be repaired.
