Microscopically there is a proliferation of the con-nective tissue elements, and of the endothelium of the capil-laries and lymphatics inside the hepatic lobules. As a late stage it is found that the individual liver cellsmay be separated one from the other by the proliferated fibroustissue. Still later there may be well-marked bands of fibroustissue that transverse the organ. When the hepatic changes do not occur until a late datethey are comparable to those of late acquired syphilis. Thedisease is not very rare: cases have been reported by Wilks,^^Morris,^^ Fournier/^ Hudelo,*- Forbes,°^ Mackenzie^* andothers. Lardaceous changes frequently complicate the picture.
