Shearer was born August 19, 1833. In 1850 John W. Shearer went to Detroitwhere he learned the carpenter and joinerstrade with his brother, James Shearer, and in1856 he went South and spent four years invarious car shops, filling the position of mastermechanic. His last business partnershipwas with H. Watkins. On June 30, 1866, hemarried Mary E. Earned, who was born inOhio, and they had tln-ee children. John died May 15, 1903. Fred E. Shearer was educated in the BayCity public schools and began his business ca-reer in the employ of E. B. Foss & Company,tallying, a few months later accei^ting the sameposition on the river for different parties, andduring his third and last season working forGeorge Jackson.
