THE making of a good street railway rail splice be-gins with and depends upon the design of the railand should be formed at such angles that the fittingportions of the splice will be gradually pressed to a solidbearing by the impact of the bolts. Bad joints are gener-all) the result of light, flimsy splice bars which do not litthe rails they are bolted to, and further in the use of lightinsufficient bolts of inferior manufacture. The SamsonBridge Joint is designed to obviate these difficulties, inthat, the top and bottom portions of the splice bars have abearing against the rail on both sides. The great import-ance of this will be apparent when it is remembered thatat the instant when a wheel passes from one rail to an-other, these side fittings have to sustain the entire weightof the traveling load. The splice shown here is 25 inches long and 5^inch thick of rolled steel, and the bolts are the patent grip. thread with square nuts which lock themselves in a 4-bolt splice, the failure of any one of the boltsnecessarily destroys the entire usefulness of the splice;whereas having six bolts it is possible to have two ofthem fail and the joint still preserve its integrity. Thebolts used in the joint in question, cost double the price ofthe ordinary track bolt, but the selling price of the com-plete joint is no higher than the poorer kinds. The splicebar is the invention and manufacture of the TramwayRail Company of Pittsburg. The joint is shown in the illustration as resting on their7-inch clip chair, the whole affording a most simple, last-ing and perfect joint, and a combination which is receiv-ing the highest endorsement b\ leading managersthroughout the country.
