Vintage print circa 1851 depicting Joan of Arc being burned at the stake on May 30 1431. Joan of Arc, also known as The Maid of Orleans, is a national heroine of France and a Catholic saint. Born a peasant girl in eastern France circa 1412, she led the French army to several victories during the Hundred Years' War, claiming divine guidance. She was eventually captured by the Burgundians, sold to the English and tried for heresy by an ecclesiastical court and burned at the stake when she was still only 19. Pope Callixtus III later reviewed the decision, found her innocent and declared her a martyr. She was beatified in 1909 and canonized in 1920 and is one of the patron saints of France.
