He -was a member of Battery E ofthe Illinois National Guard previous tohis admittance to the First Officers Train-ing Camp at Fort Sheridan, where he wasassigned to Battery A. Upon completionof training at Fort Sheridan he was com-missioned a second lieutenant, and orderedto the 8th Field Artillery Brigade wherehe was promoted to a first lieutenancy. Itwas while the brigade was moving towarda port of embarkation in October, 1918,that Lieutenant Berry was stricken ill andconveyed to a hospital in Youngstown,O., where he succumbed after a ten daysillness.
