An early portrait of noted jockey Steve Donoghue (1884 – 1945) who was a notable Lancashire-born flat-race champion jockey. It is said that he decided to take up the profession after winning a prize for riding a circus donkey. He notably won 1925 English Derby on MANNA, a British thoroughbred racehorse and sire who also won the 1925, 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. Manna was a bay horse bred in Ireland by James J. Maher at his Confey Stud in County Kildare. His owner H Morriss was a bullion broker.
