Sunny view snowy Millstone Grit outcrop and rocky hillside, north end of Standedge escarpment, looking west over Castleshaw Valley, South Pennines, UK
The winter of 2010-2011 included the UK's coldest December since Met Office Records began in 1910. The mean December 2010 temperature in the UK was minus one degree Celsius. In some places the temperature reached minus 10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees F). Late November to Boxing Day 2010 experienced two spells of severe winter weather with very low temperatures and significant snowfall. The first spell lasted two weeks from Thursday, 25 November to Thursday, 9 December. The UK was under the influence of a prolonged north-easterly airstream drawing bitterly cold air from Northern Europe and Siberia. The gritstone outcrop in the shot is at the northern end of the Standedge escarpment, between the Colne valley in West Yorkshire and the Castleshaw Valley in Lancashire. The Pennine Way runs along the escarpment. The Upper and Lower Castleshaw Reservoirs, below the gritstone hillside, were built 1887-1891 by Oldham Corporation Waterworks. The small town of Delph lies right background. A view looking west from the Pennine Way on its journey north to the A640 Huddersfield Road, a small distance north across the moors behind the camera.
