Benign bone tumours. These non-cancerous lumps of bone have been removed from the shoulder joint of a person affected by osteochondromatosis. This rare condition creates a benign change or proliferation in the synovium (joint lining tissue) which changes to form bone-forming cartilage nodules (osteochondromas, seen here). These nodules can be shed into the joint space itself where they enlarge and develop into bone (ossification) over time. They can cause pain, swelling and stiffness of the joint and are often removed through surgery.
