Welding the junctions of a platinum/rhodium- platinum alloy thermocouple, using a specially- designed microwelding torch. A thermocouple consists of two lengths of dissimilar metals joined at each end to form an electric circuit. If the two junctions are kept at different temperatures a voltage flows between them. This thermoelectric effect allow a thermocouple to be used as a thermometer when coupled to a suitable meter. Photographed at a Johnson Matthey location in Sunnyvale, California, USA.
