The science and art of surgery : being a treatise on surgical injuries, diseases, and operations . originating in the mucous membranes. Dropsy and Cystic Disease of the Antrum, from accumulationor rather development within this cavity of glairy mucus, like the con-tents of a ranula or ganglion, or of a thinbrownish serous fluid containing choleste-rine, occasionally occur. But in most in-stances the accumulation of fluid is serousand not mucoid, and the disease is evi-dently a true cystic development, with anactive growth independent of some cases, distention of the antrum ap-pears to be simply the result of the accu-mulation of its natural secretion ; for, as theaperture leading from this cavity into thenose is a little above its floor, there may bea natural tendency for the fluid secretedhere to accumulate to some extent before itis discharged; and if this aperture be fromany cause blocked up, the secretion may in-crease to so great a degree as to occasionserious inconvenience by its outward pres-sure. In such cases the accumulation of fluid may after a time expand. The floor of the orbit or the roof of the mouthmay be caused to bulge, and the nasal cavity may be encroached upon. According to C. Heath, we find that Dentigerous Cysts may occurin either jaw. They arise in connection with teeth which from somecause have been retained in the jaw. They are almost invariably con-nected with the permanent teeth. Tomes believes that they arise fromthe excessive formation around a retained tooth of a fluid which is nor-mally found after the complete development of the enamel,
