Optical image of the Dumbbell Nebula, also known as Messier 27 and NGC 6853. This is a typical planetary nebula, formed by gas thrown off by a central star near the end of its life. The Dumbbell Nebula is some 1200 light years away in the constellation Vulpecula. This image was made using the Very Large Telescope 'Antu' at the Cerro Paranal Observatory, Chile.
