. Railway mechanical engineer . ve, known as Class Y2, was built in the com-panys shops at Roanoke, Va. On account of the limited clearances, compactness in de-sign was necessary in order to obtain proper proportions. Itwas found that low pressure cylinders 39 in. by 32 as large as could be used, and in order to secure acylinder ratio of 2 ,2 to 1 it was necessarj- to use high pressure the flexible connections in the oil pipes to the low pressurecylinders, which have been a source of trouble. All othercylinder lubrication is furnished by sight feed lubricators. The pistons are built up of cast steel centers with cast ironwearing rings. While this design is not as light as the rolledsteel piston, it is desirable because of the ease with which anew wearing ring may be applied, without necessitating thepiston being again fitted to the rod. Steam distribution is controlled by the Baker valve gearand the Norfolk & Western Class AT standard power reversegear. Hancock pneumatic cylinder cock operating cylinders. 5 1 ^4> Boiler of the Norfolk & Western Mallet cylinders 24^/^ inch by 32 inch, and a boiler pressure of 230lb. per sq. in. Another evidence of close clearances will beseen in the arrangement of the pop valves, which are laidflat on the l>oiler, with a shield between them to deflect thesteam upward. It will also be noticed that the air pumpsand bell are located on the boiler front, the fjell being oper-ated by means of a GoUmar bell ringer. Both high and low pressure cylinders are equipped withpiston valves. The valves in the low pressure cylinder are17 in. in diameter, while those of the high pressure cylindersare 14 in. in diameter. In order to obtain steam and of ample area, free from abrupt Ix-nds, it was founddesirable to make the low pressure valves outside McCord force feed lubricator is for lubricating thelow pressure cylinders. This lubricator is used to eliminate actuate the cylinder cocks, and the grates
