Elizabeth Barbican Tower Framed by Trees in Spring
ISTRA, MOSCOW REGION, RUSSIA - View from a park near the New Jerusalem Resurrection Monastery on the beautiful Elizabeth Barbican (above a gate) Tower (Russian: nadvratnaya Elizavetinskaya bashnya) framed by trees on a sunny spring day. The tower was built with over towers and walls of the monastery by design of prominent Russian architect Yakov Bukhvostov in 1690–1694. After the destruction of the architectural ensemble by Nazi Germans in December 1941, many towers were ruined and the Elizabethan Barbican Tower has suffered the most. The restoration works started right after WWII and finished at late 1950s when the monastery was opened as a museum (but not as a religious house). In the present time, after the latest great restoration works 2009-2018 of the New Jerusalem Monastery, the shining on the sun painted white Elizabeth tower and fortification walls look like anew.
