The present build-ing, erected in 1819, is the thirdedifice which the church has had andstands near the original one. It hasmany historic associations and isthe most precious memorial whichSpringfield possesses. During itslife of 268 years it has had onlyeleven ministers, so that the averageperiod of service is more than twenty-four years. Who can estimate theinfluence of this ancient institutionin the intellectual, moral, charitable, reform and religious movements ofthe last two centuries and a half!. FRANK L. GOODSPEED, First Church
