The first Continental Congress metin Philadelphia, in Carpenters Hall, on September 4,1774. The State-House, from which national inde-pendence was proclaimed, was not available, becausethe Pennsylvania Assembly was about to sit there. Itwas in Philadelphia, on July 9, 1778, that the Articlesof Confederation were adopted and signed, and here,on May 14, 1787, the Constitutional Convention met,finishing its work September 17, 1787, amid greatrejoicing.
