Climate Change research. Scientists collecting a 10 metre ice core, drilled from the Antarctic near the Rothera Research Station. Chemical analysis of ice cores can reveal changes in climate over several hundreds of years. Air trapped in the firn (the upper layer of frozen snow) is untainted by the atmospheric air, and thus provides direct evidence of what the composition of the atmosphere was at the time when the firn froze. Studying how the atmosphere has changed can lead to better models for predicting how it will change in the future.
