While the art of his native land was developing its natural tendenciesand character around him on every side, he clung to Elsheimersvol. 1. d T8 REMBRANDT subjects, often mingling the familiar types or features of Hollandwith reminiscences of Italian art and scenery. Pictures by him arescattered throughout Europe, but may be found in greatest numberin German galleries, public and private. The vogue they onceenjoyed was followed by complete neglect ; and recent researchesconnected with Rembrandt, rather than their intrinsic merit, hasbrought them into notice again. An Ulysses and Nausicaa in the Brunswick Museum, signedwith his monogram, is dated 1609, and was therefore painted twoyears after Lastmans return from Italy. It was a favourite episode with the artist, for ten years later he painted itagain, in a picture now in the Augsburg Museum,|J modifying the composition in some notable points.
