Aerospace research. Researcher preparing an anemometer for use in a wind tunnel during research into destructive downdrafts generated during thunderstorms. These downdrafts are known as downbursts, and are a hazard for aircraft, especially during take-off and landing. The system of 56 propeller fans behind the researcher can be used to simulate conditions in a downburst, and the anemometer is a device that is used to measure wind speeds. This research was being carried out in 2004 at the Silsoe Research Institute in Bedfordshire, UK. The institute closed in 2006, but the wind research continues with the University of Birmingham.
