But his heart was elsewhere, and when at last the oppor-tunity came to devote his entire time to ancestral study,which for five or six years had crowded each otherwiseunemployed moment, the alternative of accepting a fineposition in San Francisco, with the main branch of thebusiness firm, had no attraction for him. And, so, finally,the young man of not yet twenty-one, found what for yearshe had been yearing for, apparently better health andentirely congenial work. His artistic studio was the only one west of Chicagodevoted exclusively to genealogical research and heraldic.
