Post-mortem face of the Crucified Christ, pierced by the crown of thorns: detail of late-1400s polychrome Flemish Burgundian Pietà, sculpted in limestone, in the cathedral at Nevers, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France. The complete artwork shows the grieving Virgin Mary gently clasping her son’s wounded body around the chest after it has been taken down from the cross.

Nevers, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France: close-up to the face of the crucified Christ, as depicted by an unknown Flemish sculptor in the late-15th century. Jesus still wears the crown of thorns in this detail of a polychrome Burgundian Pietà originally in a church in Nevers, but now displayed in the city’s Cathédrale Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte. The complete Pietà, sculpted in limestone, depicts a relatively youthful grieving Virgin Mary with long golden hair staring into her son’s face as she tenderly cradles his injured body in her arms. Although the artist is unknown, the Pietà is typical of the 15th century Flemish Burgundian tradition influenced by the earlier style of the important Dutch sculptor Claus Sluter ( - ), who served as court sculptor to the Duke of Burgundy from the 1380s.
