Jaguar hunting a tapir, illustration. The jaguar (Panthera onca) is the apex predator in its range. It is found in the jungles of Central America and northern South America. It is a good swimmer, and hunts aquatic and semi-aquatic prey, such as the tapir shown here. It also hunts forest pigs and deer. It is a solitary, secretive animal, rarely seen. The Brazilian tapir (Tapirus terrestris), also known as the South American tapir, is a herbivorous mammal that feeds on grasses, fruits and aquatic plants.
