Three Gorges Dam. This model of the dam shows the main spillway flanked by two powerhouses (top left), a shiplift and a sequence of five locks (top right). The dam is kilometres across and spans the Yangtze River in Sandouping, Yichang, China. Construction of the dam was completed in 2006, for it to become fully operational in 2009. It has a reservoir of over 600 square kilometres in area and an energy production of 85 billion kilowatt hours per year.
