A statue of Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space, was today unveiled outside the British Council's London HQ in the Mall to mark the 50th anniversary of the first manned space flight. Today, 14 July 2011, it is exactly 50 years to the day that Gagarin met the Queen as part of his visit to the UK in 1961. The unveiling of the statue was carried out by the cosmonaut's daughter Elena Gagarina, now Director fo the Kremlin Museums in Moscow.

The statue will be installed in the Mall for a period of 12 months.
