Terra Nova Antarctic pony. British explorer Edward Wilson (1872-1912) with the pony 'Nobby' in October 1911 during the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). Also known as the Terra Nova Expedition, the primary expedition objectives were scientific. Led by Robert Falcon Scott, the shore party of 34 spent two seasons exploring on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. Nineteen Manchurian ponies were used, but by 9 December 1911, those remaining (including Nobby) had weakened on the journey to the South Pole and had been shot to provide food. Scott, Wilson and three others died in 1912 returning from their journey to the South Pole.
