The domestic encyclopaedia : or, A dictionary of facts, and useful knowledge: comprehending a concise view of the latest discoveries, inventions, and improvements ; chiefly applicable to rural and domestic economy ; together with descriptions of the most interesting objects of nature and art ; the history of men and animals, in a state of health or disease ; and practical hints respecting the arts and manufactures, both familiar and commercial ; illustrated with numerous engravings and cuts ; in five volumes ; volume I[-V (Volume 4) . guineason Mr. S. Holmes, for his inven-tion of an oven, which is heatedwithout flues. The whole consistsof a cast-iron oven, from the sideof which a solid piece of that metalprojects into the fire, where it con-stantly remains ; and, on becom-ing red-hot, communicates to thewhole oven a degree of heat suffi-cient for baking bread, while it at the same time assists the fire inroasting meat. In the common iron ovens, theheat is communicated by meansof flues, which waste a consider-able part of the fire in its pas-sage, and likewise requires muchlabour to keep them of an uniformheat. The contrivance last allud-ed to, is intended to supply thisand other inconveniences: andMr. Holmes state, that his ovenuniformly remains at a bakingheat, without any additional ex-pence, or trouble. We under-stand, however, that such improve-ment is by no means new; andthat a similar method of savingfuel, has for several years beenpractisedin the West of England.
