SERVED THREE YEARS INTHE CIVIL SEAL ANDINSCRIPTION ON THE MIDDLE SECTION OF THE SOUTHWEST SEAT SETH ALDEN ABBEY, 1798-1880 Judge Abbey left a manuscript, dated June 15, 1872, in whichhe gives his recollections of his grandfather, Captain Abbey, asfollows: When a small boy I was frequently at his house for a weekat a time, and have heard him tell many a thrilling tale of hishairbreadth escapes, hardships, sufferings, etc., in service againstthe French and Indians. At the breaking out of the Revolutiona volunteer company was raised in his neighborhood, and he waselected their captain. I have heard him say, frequently, that hthad chances of promotion, often, but his men would not consentto his leaving them. I saw many of his old soldiers who servedduring the war; and the neighbors were as particular when ad-dressing any of them, in giving them their title, as Corporal sucha one or Sergeant such a one, as they would be in addressing ageneral.
