Forest Watersheds, Soils, and Pollution Forests and rangelands are the source of two-thirds of America's high-quality water. These watersheds also produce timber, forage for domestic livestock, habitat and food for wildlife, and recreational opportunities for people. All these uses influence water quality and yields; soil properties; site productivity for timber, forage, and wildlife; air quality; and quality of land for recreation. Because these influences promise to become greater as intensity of forest management in- creases, research must develop ways to minimize their impact on air, soil, and water quality.
