Apocrine metaplasia, light micrograph

Light micrograph of a breast cyst with apocrine metaplasia, a benign change. The cells are arranged along the lining of a cystic space and have abundant pink cytoplasm and round blue nuclei. Towards the apical portions of the cells are “apocrine snouts” that look like small nubby projections into the cystic space. There is loose granular material (upper half of picture) within the cystic space. The area outside the apocrine cyst consists of collagenous breast stroma (lower half of picture with pink-red wispy lines). Haematoxylin and eosin stained tissue section. Magnification: 200x when printed at 10cm.
