Caption: Jaipur, Rajasthan, India - Apr 2003. An ayurvedic panchakarma patient at Coconut Lagoon Resort in Kerala, India. Ayurveda is a 5,000-year old holistic discipline outlining how to live a long and fruitful life through yoga, meditation, food and treatment. Although more concerned at preventing disease rather than curing, ayurveda does suggest passive and organic treatments (especially massage) for illness. Traditionally located in sanatoriums, ayurveda has known a renaissance in recent years, spurred on by the recent spa tourism boom. Dozens of resorts, especially catering for tourists, have recently opened their doors in Kerala. Although they offer short and sketchy programs, many doctors feel that what the resorts offer is not ayurveda, and thereby place their discipline's authenticity at risk. This man suffers from Parkinson's Disease. He has been on a panchakarma treatment program for five weeks.
