In 1796, after the inaugu-ration of the new government, the exports of Philadelphiaamounted to $17,000,000, and in 1911 to about $80,000, much of the product of the state is sent elsewhere in thecountry or is shipped to other ports to be sent abroad. Approxi-mately one thousand Vessels clear from Philadelphia for foreigncountries each year. During the wars with England and Tripoliand during the Civil War period, the commerce declined. Inthe interval and since there has been a steady growth. Merchandising has always been one of the chief causes of theprosperity of this state, and the great department stores foundin its large cit
