Seafight at Chesme
The seafight at Chesme took place on July 5, 1776. Fought during the Russo-Turkish War, pitting Turkey against Russia. It ended in a decisive defeat for Turkey. Catherine II, or Catherine the Great, empress of Russia at the time, had placed Count Alexei Orlov in charge of the Russian fleet. In this engraving by P. C. Canot and W. Watts after a painting by R. Paton —all three of whom date to the period—the Turkish ships are seen moving south into Chesme Bay and forming a defensive line. Bombardment of the ships by the Russians caused one Turkish ship to catch fire and that spread to the others, resulting in a Turkish defeat.
