The Old Town waterfront of Krk Town, on Krk island, Croatia, is dominated by the cathedral bell tower or campanile, standing above Roman baths and medieval foundations, but with its upper stages, rebuilt in the 18th century, now with an octagonal onion dome and a statue of an angel.
Krk Town, Krk island, Croatia: Krk Town or City, located on the southwest coast of Krk island, is one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic Sea. Krk has been continuously inhabited since ancient times by Illyrians, Romans, Byzantines, the Frankopan or Frangipani dynasty, the Venetian Republic and Austria. Mosaics and remains of Roman buildings, including a Temple of Venus, survive in parts of the Old Town, as well as medieval fortifications, including the Frankopan Castle and remnants of the Venetian city walls. The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was founded as an early Christian basilica in the 5th century above the remains of Roman baths, although the building now has a mainly 11th or 12th century Romanesque appearance. The upper stages of the Romanesque bell-tower or campanile, dominating this view of the Old Town waterfront and rebuilt in Baroque style in the late 18th century, are surmounted by an octagonal onion dome and an angel.
